What Is the One-Day Workshop All About? Using Sean Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, students are given a powerful overview of the 7 Habits® in their language. In the one-day workshop, students will learn the time-tested principles of the 7 Habits and how to apply them to the tough issues and life-changing decisions they face. Utilizing full student participation plus humor, anecdotes, videos, real-life scenarios, and relevant interactive exercises, students will laugh while they learn with a newfound belief in their own abilities. In addition to the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, each participant will also receive the Success Guide workbook (36 pages). Included for facilitators is a PowerPoint® presentation, overhead transparencies, and cool videos designed just for teens. This workshop can also be adapted to teach the use of an agenda or a planner. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens are essentially seven characteristics that happy and successful teens the world over have in common. Habits 1, 2, and 3 deal with self-mastery called the "Private Victory®." Habits 4, 5, and 6 deal with relationships and teamwork, or the "Public Victory®." The last habit, Habit 7, is the habit of renewal. It feeds all of the other six habits. The training provides students with a step-by-step framework for boosting self-image, building friendships, resisting peer pressure, achieving goals, improving communication and relationships with parents, and much more. The habits build upon each other and foster behavioral change and improvement from the inside out. Habit 1: Be Proactive® Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind® Habit 3: Put First Things First® Habit 4: Think Win-Win® Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood® Habit 6: Synergize® Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw® |

What Impact Does the Workshop Have on Teens and Students? The 7 Habits have a profound effect on students' attitudes and belief about themselves and others in a relatively short amount of time. Although the results of exposure to such powerful principles cannot be fully measured over the span of an entire lifetime, one school was able to track the attitudes during the course of a regular semester term. The self-concept students had made the most dramatic improvement of all the survey items. Increased perception of personal self-control over one's life and one's choices is one of the keys to personal health and well-being. The next highest increase occurred in students' willingness and openness to work with others on projects. Collaboration and interdependence are skills highly sought after in today's workplace. At the end of a semester's study of the 7 Habits, Joliet Township High School asked a few more questions of their students. The remarkable results are below. Ninety percent of students surveyed either agreed or strongly agreed with these statements:

What Are Teens Saying About This Workshop? I found that this workshop was very helpful in changing my perspectives on school and my behavior toward others. It also helped me realize that not all motivational-type workshops have to be boring. This workshop was well presented and catered well to the age group who attended it. Juliana R.
I have been working on all of the habits and have already seen results. I now have better relationships, make better decisions, am more accepting of people, have a more balanced lifestyle, and am overall happier. Probably my favorite habit is #1: Be Proactive. I play a lot of basketball, volleyball, and tennis. Before I read this book, I found it easy to get SO mad when I made a stupid mistake. Then I would play poorly because I was still mad about that one mistake. Now I can just put it behind me and go on with the game. Jessie K.
I recently took a class which included the teaching of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Before I took this class, I was full of bad habits, and although I wasn't involved in anything really bad, there were certainly some aspects of my life that needed improvement.... I think that Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind has really influenced my decision in recent choices concerning college and other important choices in my life. Steve E.
The workshop taught me to organize, manage my time effectively, and work toward a goal. The workshop leader discussed how teens can accept responsibility for their actions by being proactive. I found this interesting because it shows how it can be easier for teens to walk away from tough situations. The objective of the workshop was to get teens to start thinking now about the future and to cooperate and learn from others. I know I will definitely start thinking more about my future. I would encourage other students to go to this workshop because it can help you organize your life. Too many teens take the wrong path with alcohol and drugs. I don't want to be just another one of those teens. Maria P.

What Are Educators Saying About the Workshop? The 7 Habits program has been instrumental in positively impacting the climate at Coppell Middle School East. We hear students who are in the hallways discussing the concepts and using terms like "win-win" and "emotional piggybanks." We cannot wait to see the outcome on students who will participate in the program for three years. The realm of impact of the program extends to the students' friends and family, as well as our staff and their families. Coppell Middle School East Staff
Coppell, TX I started to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens out loud to my English class last year and am doing the same for my Careers and Colleges English class this year.... I love working with these teens and am overwhelmed at how quickly they recognize [The 7 Habits] concepts as "truths." They recognize wisdom when they hear it and are quick to incorporate these strategies into their lives. I understand it's not an overnight change, but little by little I see progress and it's a beautiful thing! Laura Lebessis, High School Teacher
Brantford, Ontario The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens course...was the most remarkable experience.... I saw some amazing changes in students who were rough and tough at the beginning of this course change into caring and considerate individuals. I saw a couple of relationships end for the RIGHT reasons. I even was able to witness a teenager come out of her shell of being a "doormat"-type person. Randy Schmidt, Community Business Partner
Cedar River, IA The feedback I have received from students, teachers, and parents has been very positive. [One of the English teachers] has noticed considerable improvement on the part of some of her students in regards to being proactive and taking responsibility for their actions. The continued follow-up and reinforcement throughout the year will be the key to making the things they learned "habits." Darrell W. Ricketts, Principal

What resources are available to help teens write their own mission statement? The best way to know where you want to end up is to write a personal mission statement. A mission statement is like a personal credo or motto that states what your life is all about. It’s like a tree with deep roots, stable, and isn’t going anywhere, but alive to continually grow. It will open your eyes to what’s really important to you and help you make decisions accordingly. It will also help you discover what you do really well. The Great Discovery is a fun activity designed to help you get in touch with your deeper self as you prepare to write a mission statement. As you look at the activity, answer the questions honestly. When you are finished, we think you’ll have a better idea of what inspires you, what you enjoy doing, whom you admire and where you want to take your life. Ready...set...now…go for it!
